A Covenanted Community – December 4, 2011

In anticipation of the congregation revisiting its current covenant for a potential revision, Rev. Lilli Nye offers a service on the subject of covenant. The great Universalist preacher, Hosea Ballou (1771-1852), wrote, “If we agree in love, there is no disagreement that can do us any injury, but if we do not [agree in love], no other agreement can do us any good.” This gets at the essence of being a “covenanted community.” A covenant, like a loose embrace, holds a community together around core spiritual and relational commitments, while allowing space for freedom, personal conscience, and the tensions that sometimes arise in disagreement and in creative process.
