Shortly after the birth of the Rev. Anne Bancroft’s first child, her mother-in-law sent her a book called A Good Enough Parent. She remembers noticing the title of it on the bookshelf where she relegated it. Since she didn’t read it, she wondered: Was it a volume of instructions on how to be “good enough”? Or, might it have been a reassurance that whatever she could muster would have to be “good enough”?
