Practicing Lent – March 15, 2015

The Christian season of Lent is often practiced as a time of “giving up” things–abstaining from certain foods, or fasting altogether–in this period leading up to Easter.  But abstinence is not only a Christian construct. Muslims fast during Ramadan. Jews give up all things leavened during Passover. Buddhists practice long stretches of abstinence from regular life during sasheens.  How might Unitarian Universalists understand abstinence in a positive light? Is there something useful to be gained in saying no to some of our habits? The Rev. Anne Bancroft examines how we might we find value in Practicing Lent.
