The Rev. Anne Bancroft considers the challenges we face in seeking to reconcile our inner and outer worlds. She draws on the work of Dr. Howard Thurman, a spiritual mentor for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, “I determine to live the outer life in the inner sanctuary. The outer life must find its meaning, the source of its strength in the inward sanctuary. As this is done, the gulf between outer and inner will narrow and my life will be increasingly whole and of one piece.’
