After decades of relative obscurity — characterized most often by disappointment — the field of Artificial Intelligence has over the past few years burst into public awareness with one startling feat after another. Among the many technological and philosophical aspects of these rapidly evolving entities, one feature deserving of attention by spiritual communities is the appearance of autonomous moral agency: we are barreling toward a world where our creations carry out not just mechanical or computational labor, but also make decisions with real moral and ethical dimensions. Choices about what should and should not go forward must not be left to market forces and technological prowess alone, so there is some urgency for faith communities to engage with the issues now, while the groundwork is still being laid. Readings and hymns will include contributions from both human and cybernetic creators.
